Why is it important to find a solution to this challenge?
During the past few years, educational companies, commercial companies, governmental institutions, and NGO’s have developed various teaching materials on the topic of energy, targeted at primary school children. The materials cover the range from an entire program, to just a single lesson, to an excursion to sites such as a power plant. The diversity regarding the different aspects of energy is equally wide: production, distribution, the transition, etc.
Although these materials were developed to help teachers, the lack of an overview or inventory makes it difficult for teachers to find suitable lessons for their classes and, thus, use them. Moreover, many teachers are unable to make time for lessons on energy in addition to the regular educational programme they need to deliver.
Let’s make it easier for teachers to find suitable educational materials on energy. We challenge you to develop an online tool to retrieve energy teaching materials, categorising the content into various primary school levels, helping teachers find the topic of their interest, and rating the quality of the materials. And, last but not least, the tool should match the materials to the general learning objectives all primary school teachers in the Netherlands work with. As a result, teachers can integrate energy education into their regular programme without much effort.
