What can be done to improve the accessibility of ICT education? How can we increase the attractiveness of the ICT studies amongst all people despite of their age, gender or cultural background? What could be the solution that helps to increase the diversity in the ICT sector?

In Finland, the discussion regarding diversity in the ICT field has mainly been focused around the numbers of men and women working in the sector, but the concept of diversity goes well beyond that. Our challenge is about making ICT education more attractive and easily accessible for everyone disregarding the person’s gender, age or cultural background.

How to prepare for the challenge?

Try to find examples of different needs around you and write a short story about the situation (personalize your story). You can for example interview your parents, relatives, neighbors, siblings, peers. During the challenge, compare your stories within the team and try to find the lowest common denominator for your stories. Think of life-long-learning, starting from high school (or even before) all the way to working life and close to retirement, and try to figure out what are the push and pull factors: what might encourage the people in these stories to be willing to update their ICT skills and to participate in ICT courses, what are the obstacles they might face, and how to overcome these obstacles.

Why is it important to find a solution to this challenge?

The way we work is changing, and it creates new demands for constantly updating our skills and knowledge. Information technology has spread to almost all areas of work, and artificial intelligence changes many professions in the future. We certainly need more experts in for example programming, AI, machine learning, and information security, but we should also make sure that regardless of their field of work, more and more people have a better understanding of the digital transformation and the way applications and systems are developed, as that will help them in seeing the possibilities for improving products and services, or finding answers to global challenges.

What is the possible impact of a good solution?

In the short term, the solution can be taken into use in the FITech ICT initiative. We hope the solution helps us in removing possible doubts and obstacles people might have and encourage everyone to update their ICT skills.Furthermore, the solution hopefully increases the general interest towards the ICT sector, introduces a new group of people to the field and perhaps encourages others who have previously worked in the field to update their skills and to return to this sector.

At its best, this may lead to personal growth stories, enthusiastic new ICT professionals from various backgrounds entering the industry, and people who have worked in the field for a longer period of time getting to work in teams that are more diverse. It would be beneficial for the companies to be able to recruit personnel from a more diverse pool of ICT professionals.

What is the expected outcome of this challenge?

A practical solution that benefits the organizers of ICT education. Whether the solution is an idea, a campaign, a tool, or something else, it should enable a more diverse group of people to be able and willing to update their ICT skills and knowledge by participating in a (continuous learning) course.
