How to prepare for the challenge?
1. Bring together a team. Each team is limited a minimum of 2 people and maximum of 15 people. Remember: Interdisciplinarity is the key to innovation.
2. Explore the Scratch platform. Check out the Scratch projects of others, and use the time before the challenge is announced to get to know the programing language.
3. Register for the Hackathon before 3.10.2019.
4. Get to know more about the issues related to sustainable production and consumption of food, clothing or electronics. Pick one!
Why is it important to find a solution to this challenge?
According to the UN, globally, the population is expected to rise to 9.3 billion in 2050. Fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world, responsible for 10 percent of the world’s carbon footprint and damage to our water, air, and soil. With global electronic waste hitting 50 tonnes per annum, population rises mean further urbanisation and increasing affluence in developing and developed nations. Agriculture often places significant pressure on natural resources and the environment. Sustainable agricultural practices are intended to protect the environment, expand the Earth’s natural resource base, and maintain and improve soil fertility.
Can you think of how to explain sustainable production of sufficient human food, feed, fiber, and fuel to meet the needs of a sharply rising population to your family? Do you know any good practices in your vicinity?
The format of the challenge which needs to be programmed in Scratch will be announced on 3.10.2019.
What is the possible impact of a good solution?
The impact of the good solution is twofold. Firstly, by participating in this challenge you will need to inform yourself about the sustainability issues in production of goods and food. By doing so you will become more mindful of complexity of the system and perhaps you will even discover a new passion! Secondly, the good solution can be used by your friends of family to help them figure out how to introduce sustainable solutions in their everyday life.
What is the expected outcome of this challenge?
A good solution to the challenge will not only be functional code. A good solution will also demonstrate the background research on the topic which the participants of the hackathon had to go through in order to provide a product that conveys educational content able to address the sustainability issues of the challenges.
