VIRTUAL Hackathon for Good AI

Join our virtual DigiEduHack to solve real challenges and combine fostering of digital skills with a reflection on the sustainability issues of the modern world. Pupils can showcase their creative problem solving, build skills such as collaboration and perseverance, and reflect on the interaction between technology and people on a European and global scale. The best teams can win €5000 in a global award contest and are eligible for the organizer´s award fund of 500 EUR.

How to prepare for the challenge?

1. Bring together a team. Each team is limited a minimum of 2 people and maximum of 15 people. Remember: Interdisciplinarity is the key to innovation. 2. Explore the Scratch platform. Check out the Scratch projects of others, and use the time before the challenge is announced to get to know the programing language. 3. Register for the Hackathon before 3.10.2019. 4. Get to know more about the issues related to sustainable waste management.

Why is it important to find a solution to this challenge?

Global temperatures are rising and pollution levels are on an increase across the world. It has been estimated that 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage is dumped into the ocean each year. These alarming levels of pollution put our future generations at severe risk. In fact, pollution is one of the biggest global killers that exist, impacting over 100 million people. In order to meaningfully combat the menace that is global pollution, we need to sensitize our family, friends to waste management techniques and systems.

What is the possible impact of a good solution?

The impact of the good solution is twofold. Firstly, by participating in this challenge you will need to inform yourself about the sustainability issues in waste management and resources. By doing so you will become more mindful of complexity of the system and perhaps you will even discover a new passion! Secondly, the good solution can be used by your friends of family to help them figure out how to be more mindful about waste disposal, or alternatives.

What is the expected outcome of this challenge?

A good solution to the challenge will not only be functional code. A good solution will also demonstrate the background research on the topic which the participants of the hackathon had to go through in order to provide a product which conveys educational content able to address the sustainability issues of the challenges.
