Solution description

Our Challenge is  to create a digital exchange & learning platform for a sustainable future in the context of this building bridges hackathon.

The idea is a sustainable platform , where globally shared knowledge and skills meet with the projects and  where users declare their local problems and find partners for their project.

Sustain. All is a global community platform that:

- connects innovative solutions to existing problems and helps funds

- enables citizens, professionals and organizations to collaborate on designing solutions

- Channels the resources from sponsors and donors to the sustainability projects on the platform.

- Creates an open source space for sharing the solutions

-Educates the people on sustainability issues through workshops and global database

We are currently lacking a globally coordinated response that would give space to the best minds and projects in the world to come together and tackle them. There are several public and private organizations that publish calls for innovations on sustainability on their respective websites or social media, however, they may not reach the targeted groups.

Sustain.ALL is an open source exchange learning platform for building bridges between projects and actuators. Students, researchers, educators and investors can exchange knowledge or collaborate among themselves transforming their skill into actions. Users can freely build and share their own ideas related to  the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and seek for investments. Participants have also the opportunity to join listed projects as collaborators.

A workshop-dedicated section is developed to provide direct access to the educational part. Panels, conferences and information about sustainability themes will be free accessible.

The success of the solution could be measured with the numbers of active users, projects and contents. Another parameter would be the money raised through the platform for the projects and also the number of organized workshops. DigiEduHack will have benefits from our solution, if we make advertisement for it by saying that “Sustain. All” was founded on this Hackathon. And they can use our website to reach their target group.

Solution context

The first challenge starts with the hackathon. In order to have some money to find other developers to program the platform, we need to win the challenge.

We will contact the ZECM to base our platform on the TU server and use the TU infrastructure. We expect to get a bit of support from the TU, because we upgrade the social contact possibilities on the TU. Then we need to design our platform website. There is the possibility to adapt the TU design to save web design costs and make the website familiar to TU members. Otherwise we already created a web design which looks more appealing and could be used.

The second challenge will be reaching the users like educators, researchers, students and investors. For that we have built up a marketing strategy that you will see in the sustainability part  like to get in touch with those groups.

If the user count growth we need to scale up on our server capacity. Therefore the platform needs to generate income. For that we discussed a financial strategy with different options to earn money.

In the first stage our financial strategy will focus to get money from Berliner Start-Up Stipendium or EXIST Gruender Stipendium. And then we will contact the   Investors, donors and public funds. In the second stage if we get funds and support, we will continue to get some fee from funded projects, fee from members and advertisement (“ebay system”: ranking up projects which paid for it).

The money will be used also Digital Assets (Servers, security connection/certificate, Infrastructure, Human Resource and Marketing.

Solution target group

Our users are a group of students, researchers, investors, citizens, governments and businesses, who want to join or create action projects related with SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).  In the first stage we will focus on the users at Tu Berlin and then we will broaden our target groups, which is listed below.

Students, Researchers, Educators :

  • First Case: who have innovative ideas but need more manpower or mentors for the project.
  • Second Case: who have innovative ideas but need funds to capital the projects.
  • Third Case: who have innovative ideas but need funds & need people to collaborate to run the projects.
  • Fourth Case: want to be collaborators in the projects.
  • Fifth Case: want to hold workshops about sustainability projects.
  • Investor (Single/private - companies):
    • Find sustainable projects which are interesting for them to invest in.
  • Citizen
    • First Case: can learn from workshops held by expertise in the specific field.
    • Second Case: joins as a collaborator in the projects.
    • Third Case: does investments for the projects
  • Start- Up
    • First Case: Look for funding from the investors related to their projects.
    • Second Case: give workshop related to sustainability projects
  • Foundations
    • First Case: NGOs investing for the projects they are interested in.
    • Second Case: give workshop related to sustainability projects

Solution impact

The impacts of different SDG's are enabled with environmental, scientific, governmental projects on the platform. Also education is improved on various subjects like technology and human rights. We could measure the impact of the solution by checking how much the projects and colaboration have contributed to reach the SDGs. Our solution will also have side effects on self empowerment of the global community.

There are also benefits for our world that we can not measure quantitatively, our aim is to create a sustainable community, who are aware of the needs of future generations and working for it in different fields. We try to bring the best ideas and projects to create the best environment.

We are planning to use the tool to measure the sustainability of the platform with Life Cycle Impact Assessment Analysis. It will give us results in 3 different categories like  Environmental, Economical and Social. This tool will help us to monitor our goals and impacts in short term and long term to reach our vision.

We have different user profiles who start to collaborate globally on the platform to solve their problems and new projects to the platform,This brings to more sustainable solutions and sustainable community with collaborations,

To give an example of some target groups and improvements:

Farmer: Improvement in education through an open source database on the solar panels he wants to build and got an investment of 20.000 Euro.

Student 1: needs to find funds and team for developing his/her own ideas, he got them from the platform.

Student 2: wants to get involved in the sustainability world and join a project using his/her skills, so he/she create a new profile

Investor: finds green projects to invest in and make a better image for his company and make an impact on earth.

  1. Value Propositions:
    1. Underfunded projects get extra capital from investor
    2. Projects gets exposure
    3. Knowledge shared
    4. New collaborations between projects and new people

Do you have a brilliant idea to make a better world? Or looking for one? Join Sustain.ALL! We build bridges between the citizens of the earth to work on sustainable projects. Simply take action! Remember to make a better world we have to #ThinkGlobalActLocalWithSustainALL.

Solution innovativeness

Our platform brings innovative ideas, projects and researches together. Sustain.ALL builds bridges in the phase of finding collaborators and fund raising phase of each project.

It offers more than what is currently in the market. Our closest competitors are Unleash.org, EcoCrowd, and Reflecta.network.

Sustain.ALL vs others :

  • Sustain.ALL offering workshop sessions that are not covered by other competitors.
  • Unleash.org is an organisation that has 3 main programs: holds a hackathon, pre-accelerator for early stage ideas/companies, and has a community to connect participants with experts. All of it is exclusively for hackathon participants of the present time and alumni. Meanwhile Sustain.ALL is open for any users who are interested in publishing a sustainability project or wanted to be involved in the project.
  • EcoCrowd (https://www.ecocrowd.de/the-platform/) focusing only on raising funds for the project. On the other hand Sustain.ALL offerings collaboration between user platform.
  • EcoCrowd reach projects inside Germany. Sustain.ALL starting to cover TU Berlin/Higher Education Institution projects.
  • Reflecta.network is a matching project with a partner platform. Meanwhile, Sustain.ALL can raise funding for the project as well.

Solution transferability

Our open source and easy accessible solution has been thought to be globally applicable: actually no area restrictions or border limits are present. The main idea could fit to other fields beyond sustainability and merging all the fields and various users in the network.

This platform is applicable for another context. Since there are plenty of other crowdsourcing platforms that have different focuses (Kickstarter, Indiegogo, GoFundMe, etc.). It means similar technology can be a platform for other topics.

The documentation could be used in many different projects in the areas of Environment, Technology, Science and Health.

Solution sustainability

Our vision is creating a long-lasting sustainable community. Our platform will act with the motto ‘Think globally , Act locally. We will start in the first stage with focusing on Tu Berlin and we will implement the project directly after the hackathon, as we already contacted the mentors at Tu Berlin. Our marketing strategy will start at the Campus of Tu Berlin.  We also want to go in direct contact with other professors and researchers and ask them if they want to share their research topics and projects on our platform. Then we can advertise these projects to other students, educators and researchers at Tu Berlin to increase our reputation. Flyers will be spreaded on the campus of the TU, the mailing list of Tu Berlin will be used for advertising information on the platform. There is an initiative called Fridays for Future Tu Berlin and they have their own Public Climate School and every week lectures where they invite different professors related to their context. This initiative will be used to spread the information also. There is another lecture series called “Projektwerkstatt”. They are having some projects related to the environment, and those students will be informed and asked for their collaborations. In the newspaper of TU, we will ask for publishing the platform information and call researchers and professors to join us.

And some social platforms like Instagram ,Facebook and Twitter will be used to show the community quick facts from the documents related to topics technology, environment, health and science. Those platforms will also be used to arrange community events and workshops.

Another option at TU is Greening Africa Together lecture, they are already having sustainable projects in Africa and they are lacking funds and partners, this platform would be the solution for their problem.

In the second stage, the marketing strategy will be out of the TU and broadening the network to Berlin and to all Germany with the help of initiatives and lectures as we mentioned above. We will contact the Umweltbundesamt, United Nations, Greenpeace, WHO, WTO.

Our mission is thinking globally and acting locally but in the second stage we will also act globally!

Solution team work

We all meet on this digital platform (DigiEduHack) to build our own digital platform!

The idea of a sustainable platform was already in the head of Bengisu, since she was doing a project at TU Berlin for plastic waste recycling in Africa. It was very hard for her to find partners and funds for her project, she recognized the lack of the sustainable platform.

After the team building phase, we all come together and develop the idea into more abroad to the last version.

We are students of TU Berlin with different backgrounds bringing the skills of engineering, sustainable thinking, management, design and research.

Bengisu is studying Msc.Environmental Engineering, she brought the idea and helped with developing business canvas and pitch.

Stefanus is studying Informations System Management and he brought the project management skills and  helped with platform visualisation and business canvas.

Irene is studying computer sciences and she brought the skills of data driven solutions and  she developed the documentation of our idea.

Max is studying electrical Engineering. He drew all the visions of the story , brought the SDG documentation.
