Learnflix is a MOOC with advanced features improving togetherness: livechat, videochat, mood button, picture-in-picture, replay, markers.

This is the last stretch of DigiEduHack 2020! We conducted a series of interviews to shine the light on the members of the 12 teams taking part in this final round of DigiEduHack and get to know their aspirations, motivations and hopes. Let's meet with the Learnflix & Chill team!

How does it feel to be among the finalists of DigiEduHack 2020?

We are absolutely amazed by the huge positive response we’ve received. It is really exciting to see what our own ideas can become and we’re super grateful for the opportunity to develop something that will help other teachers and students so much in these crazy and difficult times that we are currently in.

Tell us more about the team: did you meet on the spot or did you know from before?

That really varies! Some of us knew each other briefly from work, because we did an internship at the University of applied Sciences Ruhr West, but many of us met for the first time on the day the DigiEduHack started. We quickly discovered that we work great as a team and the diversity of our backgrounds really helped Learnflix become the well-rounded project that it is today, despite our lack of previous experience in the field of Hackathons. All of us are still in close contact with each other!

How did you organize your team: each team member had a precise role or were you all hands-on the project?

We brainstormed together and held meetings a couple times per day to keep each other updated. Between the meetings everybody quickly found something they worked best at and accomplished those tasks in smaller workgroups.

What was the team's epiphany moment? When did you realise "yes, we've got it"?

Our first moment of “wow, this really has potential, this is a great idea!” came in one of the early brainstorming meetings when we watched our mind map of the things we wanted, we needed and we could really implement, unfold into a coherent, realistic idea. But after all, nothing really compared to the moment when we watched our final presentation video and saw all of our work, our ideas, our solved problems and the obstacles we tackled coming together in the final solution. That just felt great!

Do you think your solution could work worldwide? Can it be adapted to very different contexts?

Our solution will definitely work worldwide. The Covid-19-Pandemic has really shown all of us how much room for improvement there is when it comes to tools for remote working and studying. Adapting the idea of watching videos together from entertainment into studying and working contexts and improving it with the tweaks needed for a great workflow is something that is not only relevant everywhere on the planet right now but will continue to grow in relevance for the foreseeable digital future.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your solution?

Our idea is as simple to understand as it is to use. Watching videos together is not only a necessity in this time, but also addresses the basic human needs to connect and to communicate with others, a need that we are really missing out on at the moment. Reintroducing the social factor into studying and working was a matter of heart for us in this Hackathon. Unfortunately, there is very little research about the group dynamics and interactions within tools comparable to Learnflix. Therefore, besides developing Learnflix itself we have started collecting data from several studies regarding (questions related to) group processes and user experiences with digital learning tools. 

If you're one of the three global winners, what are your next steps going to be?

Although we are already working very hard on bringing Learnflix to life, we would work even harder, improve and add even more features and start promoting our studies and our team on a global level. The whole world should be able to have the chance to use Learnflix!

Do you already have an idea on how to make your solution become real?

Yes! Winning the German DigiEduHack gave us the possibility. With the help of the money we won for our tool, we were able to start designing Learnflix and finally make it come to life!

What would you tell potential voters to make them cast their vote for your solution?

Lernflix might not be the most breathtaking and innovative idea that there is out there, but it is by far one of the most useful in everyday study- and worklife. With the ongoing pandemic and the growing digitalisation in our lifes, we for sure will have to watch more and more videos together with other people in the future, why not do it in an environment where it's practical and fun?

Could you give us a quote or a quick take-away?

We want to bring people together again and we want to fight against loneliness and social Isolation, because as students we find it very bad for us and we don't want anyone else to feel like that, too.

Anything you'd like to add?

We as a team are absolutely amazed by all the great ideas here. To be part of a global challenge like this was not necessarily on our minds when we went into the Berlin Hackathon. But through teamwork and determination we were able to make it this far.
