DigiEduHack is a global movement dedicated to solving the toughest digital education challenges organisations face today, which is manifested in a 24-hour hackathon taking place simultaneously in major cities around the world.

The basic process flow of the DigiEduHack:
1. Setting the digital education challenge: Organisations identify their digital education challenges and call on their students, innovators, researchers, education professionals or other stakeholders to come up with innovative solutions.
2. Coming up with solutions: Hosts and participants connect under a shared vision for co-creating the future of digital education, which is manifested in a 24-hour hackathon to find innovative solutions in collaboration with other interconnected hackathons around the globe.
3. Beyond the hackathon: Innovation happens when diverse perspectives are brought together - creating both tangible digital education solutions and empowered educational stakeholders. 

The format of the hackathons can follow the model below, but can also be tailored according to the host organisation's needs and capacities: 

•  Welcome session
•  Inputs on the host challenge
•  Team formation
•  Ideation
•  Parallel workshops
•  Yoga/Other energising activity
•  Final presentations to the jury
•  Wrap-up and closure: winning teams announced and prizes are given

  1. 1. Host organisation application through the DigiEduHack website between May-August.
    2. Hosts create their webpages customised to their event between June - August.
    3. Participant application through the DigiEduHack website from May – September.
    3. 3 October 2019  – the 24-hour DigiEduHack event
    4. Sharing information on your local DigiEduHack event in an online report
    5. Final global award contest, where the three teams that best represent the priority areas of the Digital Education Action Plan will be chosen and awarded €5000 each

Preparation for the DigiEduHack

Each host sets up its own local digital education challenge. The setting of clear and relevant local digital education challenges is essential to run a successful DigiEduHack.

Some tips:

• Use a: “How ..” or “What.. “ question.
   - How can we make learning design innovative, effective and fun?
   - What kind of digital technologies and tools can be implemented to improve future teaching and learning in our organisation?

• Challenge areas: access and availability, learning spaces, learning experience, emerging technologies, data exploitation, etc. (please see the website for further information and inspiration for challenge areas)

Yes, it is! It is a real DigiEduHackathon – where the magic happens somewhere during the 24 hours. Do not be intimidated - it is possible to stay awake and work for 24 hours. Take your sleeping bag with you in case you want to go away for a little nap in a quiet room.

Once you have verified your city via email, your city will appear on the map as a registered city. The next step will be to set up your individual city page for your Climathon. This will be possible from June and we will notify you as soon as the city pages are ready to be set up. The most important next steps for you are:

1. If you are not a city authority or have no contact to the city authority yet, get in touch with them as soon as possible and talk about their involvement.
2. Start defining the city challenge(s) for your Climathon
3. Go out to local organisation and companies to seek sponsorship for your event.
4. Start looking for a venue

Each Digital Education Hack host has their own host page on the Digital Education Hack website. It contains all the information about the local Digital Education Hack, with mandatory and option sections to fill out. Participants will be able to apply through the host pages to the Digital Education Hack.

The main sections of the host pages will be:

• Introduction to the Digital Education Hackathon
• Challenge description
• Schedule
• People involved (Coaches, mentor, experts, jury)
• Prizes and Follow-up
• Partner/Sponsor section

In all Eduhack communication English is the common language. However, if you have only local people at your event, the Eduhack can be run in your local language. Make sure though to use English for online communication during the day - to be part of the online buzz Eduhack creates on the day.

In all Digital Education Hack communication, English is the common language. All information that is on your Digital Education Hackcity page should be available in English, but it can be available in the local language as well. The city pages and Digital Education Hack documents can be bilingual. The Digital Education Hack team provides customisable materials – where the text can be translated into your local language. After the event the online report should also be done in English.


Once your city page is ready, your recruitment process can start. Climate-KIC provides the following to help with participant recruitment:

• A customisable city page where participants can register
• Marketing materials to help promote the Eduhack

Participant numbers vary depending on the different DigiEduHack hosts. To create a good atmosphere and create enough good solutions we recommend to have at least 30-50 participants present during a DigiEduHack.

Hosts all around the globe are preparing their DigiEduHack event during the summer of 2019. The DigiEduHack website will open for participant registration in May and the registration finishes on the 25 September. (Some hosts may differ in their recruitment period. Please check their own host organisation page on the DigiEduHack website to have up-to-date information in September 2019.)

Students, entrepreneurs, teachers, researchers and education professionals create solutions to a specific digitalization and learning challenge in a hackathon.

What you can expect to happen during the 24-hour hackathon:

Teams will ideate to come up with solutions and test these solutions further using different methodologies and discussing with experts.

3. Present progress and win support

Teams pitch their solutions to relevant local stakeholders, who will choose the best ideas and announce the winning teams.
