DigiEduHack 2024

Seize the opportunity, let's support people-driven digital transformation in education together!

Get ready: the 5th edition of DigiEduHack will take place 8-17 Nov 2024!

Addressing War-Linked Threats to Water in Ukraine

This Challenge aims to encourage Ukrainian and EU university students and staff to ideate and develop digital solutions that will address issues of water quality in conflict affected and recovering areas of Ukraine by integrating citizen science as a participatory and digitally-driven approach to community empowerment. This Challenge focuses on the knowledge gained by students and academic staff in the areas of citizen science as well as fostering digitally-enhanced education through the use of sensors and  remote sensing methods.

The Challenge is connected with 2 other DigiEduHack Challenges developed by the GROMADA partnership, namely: "The Ukrainian academic community for soil quality in Ukraine", and "The Ukrainian academic community for the legal dimensions of citizen-generated data".

This Challenge is part of the EU-funded GROMADA project (European universities supporting legal and community capacities for Ukraine's environmental recovery, https://gromada-erasmus.eu/, Project number: 2023-1-SE01-KA220-HED-000151848).

Challenge and goals

Participants will be encouraged to examine how the war is influencing water in Ukraine and about how water needs and threats may change over time, both in respect to Ukraine’s recovery but also as a result of climate change and future regulatory alignment with the European Union.

We are particularly interested in projects that are of relevance to the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions of Ukraine and in projects and solutions that identify problems or help plug gaps in our current understanding. The data that projects gather should contribute to the wellbeing and protection of communities and ecosystems in these areas. Ideally they will be projects that can be implemented by environmental science students and using only limited financial resources.

Expectations and requirements for the solutions and participants

Any projects that are proposed need to be sensitive to the wartime context in Ukraine. Considerations should include the safety and security of participants and potential sensitivities around the collection, storage and use of environmental data.

The event will be undertaken in English and participants must have the language skills to allow this.
