I Dig STEAM

The I Dig STEAM Hackathon is an event taking place from 15-17 November 2024, designed for educators and youth workers to explore how digital technology can enhance STEM education. Participants will collaborate to pilot the innovative "I Dig STEAM" platform, which integrates digital tools and creative approaches to teaching STEM subjects. Creation of the platform is co-funded by the EU under the project KA210-YOU-60999671. Through digital experimentation, brainstorming sessions, and explorative work on the platform, participants will work in teams to pilot new, engaging pedagogies that make STEM more accessible and dynamic. The hackathon encourages creative problem-solving and teamwork, with awards recognising excellence in innovation, collaboration, and presentation. Whether you’re experienced in educational technology or simply passionate about teaching, this event is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of STEM education, network with like-minded professionals, and bring fresh ideas to life.

Specific conditions to apply
  • Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 18 years old to apply.
  • Participants’ Profiles: The hackathon is open to educators, youth workers, digital technology enthusiasts, and professionals passionate about digital tools in STEM education. While no prior experience with the "I Dig STEAM" platform is required, familiarity with STEM subjects or digital tools is advantageous.
  • Team Composition: Participants are encouraged to form diverse teams consisting of educators and youth workers to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration or they can apply as an individual and be paired in teams. 
  • Language Proficiency: All communication and event proceedings will be conducted in English, so a strong command of the language is required.
  • Technology Access: Participants should have access to a laptop or tablet and a reliable internet connection throughout the event.

Challenge and goals

The I Dig STEAM Hackathon aims to pilot the "I Dig STEAM" platform, exploring creative ways to integrate digital art and technology into STEM education. By fostering collaboration between educators and youth workers, the hackathon seeks to pilot innovative online teaching modules that increase engagement, promote inclusivity, and make STEM subjects more accessible and enjoyable. Participants will go through the platform’s modules, generating new ideas and strategies for improvement. The event will culminate in actionable solutions, and a stronger community of participants. 

Expectations and requirements for the solutions and participants

Participants are expected to collaborate in teams, actively contribute to the piloting of the "I Dig STEAM" platform, and present their innovative ideas at the end of the hackathon. Educators, youth workers, and digital tech enthusiasts should bring creativity and a willingness to experiment with digital tools and art in STEM education. No prior experience with the platform is required, but familiarity with STEM topics or educational technology is a plus. Participants should have access to a laptop or tablet, a reliable internet connection, and an open mind ready for creative problem-solving. Available Support

Participants will receive comprehensive support throughout the hackathon, including:

  • Mentorship: Expert mentors in STEAM education, edtech, and digital art will be available for guidance and feedback during the event.
  • Technical Support: A dedicated support team will assist with technical issues related to the "I Dig STEAM" platform or digital tools.
  • Workshops & Resources: Pre-hackathon webinar and on-demand resources will be provided to familiarise participants with the platform and creative methodologies.
  • Collaboration Tools: Access to online collaboration platforms and communication channels (e.g., Slack) for seamless teamwork and idea sharing.

    Pre-Hackathon Webinar: Familiarization with the "I Dig STEAM" platform
    This pre-hackathon webinar is designed to help participants become familiar with the "I Dig STEAM" platform ahead of the hackathon. During this 1-hour session, participants will receive a detailed walkthrough of the platform’s features, including its interactive modules, tools, and resources. This session is crucial for participants to hit the ground running on hackathon day, ensuring that they are fully equipped to pilot the platform and contribute effectively to their teams. Participants will also receive tips on how to brainstorm and prepare for the upcoming challenges.
  • 15-17 November 2024 Time: 00:00-24:00

    Hackathon Days
    Participants log in, check-in, and access the online collaboration platform. Instructions and materials are distributed. Participants are grouped into teams. The hackathon begins. Teams work and experiment with platform tools Participants focus on testing modules and envision implementing creative learning strategies.
  • 17 November 2024 Time: 17:00

    Final countdown

    Teams finalise their projects and prepare for final presentations.

    Teams present their concepts.

    Judges deliberate and evaluate projects based on innovation, feasibility, collaboration, and educational impact.

    Winners are announced, and awards are distributed

  • 22 November 2024

    Post-Hackathon follow-up
    Participants invited to join an online community (Slack/Discord) for post-event collaboration and ongoing discussions. Feedback forms distributed to gather insights and ideas for platform improvement.

Prizes

  • A certificate of achievement, along with free access to a highly-rated online course (e.g., Udemy, Coursera) on edtech, digital art, or STEM topics up to 100 EUR. 
  • A gift voucher for a professional development bookstore or platform (e.g., Amazon, Audible), or an e-book bundle, allowing the winner to choose materials that will support their ongoing education journey up to 50 EUR
  • A spotlight feature on the hackathon’s social media platforms, highlighting the winner’s contribution
