DigiEduHack 2024 Days Conclude Successfully, Marking a New Chapter in Digital Education Innovation

Brussels, BELGIUM, December 5, 2024 — The 5th edition of the Digital Education Hackathon (DigiEduHack) has successfully concluded, following ten days of global innovation and a landmark Main Stage Event at Tallinn University. The initiative, a flagship program of the European Commission's Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027), brought together creative minds from 27 countries to reimagine the future of digital education.

The Main Stage Event, held on November 20, 2024, at Tallinn University and live-streamed to a global audience, served as the culmination of the hackathon days, featuring Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva, Director for Innovation, Digital Education and International Cooperation at the European Commission, who set the tone for the day's proceedings. The event, moderated by digital transformation expert Anett Numa, showcased Estonia's digitalisation journey and hosted critical discussions on AI in education and innovative digital education ecosystems.

"The DigiEduHack event is a great opportunity, bringing together educators, innovators, and leaders. It serves as a 'reality check' for policymakers as participants provide valuable insights about the challenges in digital education and how to solve them," said Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva, Director for Innovation, Digital Education and International Cooperation at the European Commission. "Feedback from participants has consistently shown the need for innovative approaches in education by effectively integrating emerging technologies such as AI thus shaping the future direction of our policies."

A recap video showcasing the highlights and achievements of the DigiEduHack Days is now available on YouTube, capturing the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defined this year's events.

During the preceding Hackathon Days (November 8-17), 52 hackathons were organised worldwide, addressing eight key areas of digital education:

  • Access and Availability
  • Learning Spaces and Pedagogy
  • The Learning Experience
  • Individual Competences
  • Organisational Capability
  • Well-being in Digital Education
  • Emerging Technologies for Education
  • Data-Driven Education

Teams competed in two main categories — social impact and disruptive technology — at both beginner and experienced levels. Local winners from each hackathon will now advance to the final stage, where a Steering Group will evaluate their solutions for potential further development and implementation.

The event demonstrated the growing global commitment to transforming digital education, with participants ranging from students and educators to technology innovators and policymakers. The solutions developed during the hackathon addressed real-world challenges in digital education, with teams receiving guidance from field experts throughout their 24-hour development sprints.
