Digital Waves for Clean Lakes: Education for Freshwater Protection

Lakes are among the most valuable ecosystems in Europe, providing biodiversity, freshwater, recreation, and climate regulation. Yet, they face growing threats from pollution, climate change, and unsustainable use. Protecting them requires not only science and policy, but also citizen awareness and digital literacy. This activity is part of the ProCleanLakes project (https://procleanlakes.eu/), which supports innovative approaches to lake protection and restoration through citizen engagement and digital tools.

In this challenge, teams of solvers (made by students, innovators, digital education enthusiasts, representatives of NGOs focused on environment protection etc.) are invited to design a visual mock-up for a mobile or web app that raises awareness and educates different audiences about natural lake protection and restoration. The app should make scientific knowledge engaging and accessible, helping people understand the value of lakes and how everyday actions can support their restoration.

Your mock-up could feature elements such as interactive quizzes, gamified missions, biodiversity storytelling. The focus is not on coding the app, but on showing how a digital solution could look and work to inspire learning, action, and community participation.

Challenge and goals

By participating in this challenge, the teams will:

  • Create a visual mock-up of a digital app that promotes awareness and education about natural lake protection.
  • Translate science into practice by turning lakes’ protection and restoration insights into interactive and user-friendly educational content.
  • Engage audiences (e.g., students, citizens, or local communities) through features such as quizzes, games, storytelling, or simple action guides.
  • Prototype for impact: highlight how the app could influence knowledge, behavior, and community engagement for healthier lakes.
  • Ensure adaptability: show how the mock-up could be scaled or localized across languages, cultures, and educational levels.
Expectations and requirements for the solutions and participants

Expected content for the solution that will be provided by each team:

  • A visual prototype/mock-up of the app.
  • A short description of the app’s core features and learning goals.
  • Ideas for how the app could be used in schools, communities, or public awareness campaigns to support the Mission Restore our Ocean & Waters by 2030
