Every day, campus restaurants and cafeterias end up with food that gets thrown away, therefore wasting food, money and other resources. The challenge is not only about food, but also about timing. These locations operate on strict schedules and many students, especially those with part time jobs, might not be able to go at the campus cafeteria on time. Our solution is to implement an extension to an already existing student app, so that the students can see what's available to purchase, pay within the app and generate a unique code. That specific code will give them access to a slot from a refrigerator that they will be able to open any time until the food is restocked, so they can easily access it any time they want to. The refrigerator will be located outside of the campus's cafeteria. This way students can easily access the food at any time, it reduces food waste but it also brings more profit to vendors, because normally they would just throw the food away. That way we contribute to a greener, more sustainable campus life. Of course, we know that similar apps already exist, but what makes our app unique is the 24/7 availability of the food. By using a big refrigerator, we automate the process by allowing the students to go and get the food at any time they can, reducing the stress of arriving on time at the campus restaurant.
