Solution details

A curated database of all academic research groups within a region.

Future research students will be able to access this database through a website where they will be able to keyword search and filter for their topics of interest and view the results in a simple and easy to use interface.

Database is built by scraping websites of Universities and other research institutions. The output is then be put through LLM to simplify and remove crazy academic jargon then centralised into one curated comprehensive data base.

This solution reduces friction for students when looking for research opportunities and at the same time increases visibility for research groups and allowing them to market themselves.

Tweet / Slogan

Context

1. Research groups encounter great difficulty trying to find quality research students.

2. Students looking for research opportunities have to navigate complex and often outdated online resources in order to find these opportunities.

Who Benefits?

Academic researcher - give them a tool to make finding research students easier

Research students - save time and lower barrier

Impact

Researchers - How much more productive are these researchers in term academic output.

Productivity measured from less time spent on recruiting and better quailty of research students from higher visiblity to research student which leads to more applications and thus higher quality

Students - Productivity in finding labs and more options when searching for labs leading to better match and higher satisifcation.

Team work

We are an excited team of 7 consisting students, engineers and analysts with experience in tech and healthcare industries. We understand the problem at hand and we have the capacity to validate the problem but we need to find people with techincal expertise to help us solve this problem.

Team members: Ping Li, William Cronenberg, Vladimir Popov, Ivo Kändla, Alexander Treier, Ozgil Kuz.

Innovativeness

Some exisiting solutions exist outside university websites but they are high effort and require work from researchers to use. This solution is super low effort from researchers perspective and hence more attractive.

Transferability

This issue goes beyond research students. The academic research industry still relies heavily on networks and introductions. So this can extend to other research positions.

Sustainability

Driving demand from students is key. If we can not attract students to use this platform, then this product can not provide any value to researchers who is the end customer and who would pay for this product.
