What does it take to host a DigiEduHack Hackathon — and why you should do it

Digital education is no longer just about devices or platforms. It is about ideas, inclusion, and impact. DigiEduHack invites anyone interested in rethinking education to host a hackathon and shape the future of learning — starting from their own community.

Whether you are a schoolteacher, civil servant, university leader, or startup founder, you can be a host. And here is why you should.

Hosting a Hackathon Is Easier Than You Think

A hackathon like DigiEduHack is a collaborative event where educators, students, and innovators team up to solve real-world challenges in digital education. It offers a hands-on opportunity for educators to explore new ideas, experiment with digital tools, and co-create practical solutions that can enhance teaching and learning.

You do not need hacking experience or a background in technology to host a DigiEduHack. The initiative is open to everyone, from any country, sector, or level of experience. What you do need is a challenge to explore and a willingness to create change.

Why Host a DigiEduHack Hackathon?

Schools and universities can use DigiEduHack to bring innovation directly into the classroom. Hosting promotes digital skills, such as collaborating through digital tools, understanding data privacy, etc. not only among students but also parents and colleagues. It boosts creativity, collaboration, and confidence. It also sparks conversations about new educational technologies that benefit the entire school community.

A great example is Fondazione per la Scuola (Italy), whose challenge on sustainability led to a winning solution in 2023. As Angela Jafarova, National Ambassador, puts it:

“For students, the best thing they get out of DigiEduHack is experience. They learn that the world is not fair, time is always short, and teamwork is everything.”

Public sector organisations — from local councils to national ministries — can use DigiEduHack to convene diverse voices around real challenges like online safety, equity, and digital literacy. These events foster collaboration across the education ecosystem and can directly improve public service design.

As Rodica Negru of the EU4Moldova project highlights:

DigiEduHack encourages public authorities to join because the end result of digital collaboration is better service provision and greater citizen involvement.”

Companies and startups can host to explore real-world issues in their sector, connect with future talent, and boost their innovation credentials. Hackathons create space for co-creation and often lead to partnerships or new ideas. One standout case is Bonolab, whose 2023 hackathon team developed KOIT — a solution for digital learning and e-waste — and became a global finalist.

What Makes a Great Challenge?

Every DigiEduHack starts with a challenge — a central question that reflects your local context and priorities. What issues matter to your students, your city, or your industry? What problems do you want to explore together with your community?

DigiEduHack challenges span key categories like emerging technologies in education, digital skills development, inclusive and accessible learning, data and privacy, and lifelong learning—but you can shape yours to reflect what matters most locally.

Great challenges are often grounded in the real world: making digital tools accessible in rural schools, helping teachers use AI ethically, or preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow. They can be broad or focused, as long as they inspire people to think differently.

How can DigiEduHack help you?

Your challenge is what makes your hackathon uniquely yours. It reflects your values, your learners, and the changes you want to spark — right where you are.

DigiEduHack provides you with everything you need – from start to finish:

  • A guide on how to define your hackathon challenge
  • Examples and templates from previous years
  • A simple onboarding process
  • Ready-to-use guides and communication templates
  • Personalised support and planning resources
  • Access to National Ambassadors in your country

A Global Movement with Local Impact

DigiEduHack is a global initiative, but every event is deeply rooted in its local setting. Whether you are addressing a city-wide education gap, engaging rural students, or exploring future skills with your university, your hackathon becomes part of a collective push toward better, more inclusive digital learning.

Thinking about hosting but still have questions? You are not alone.

At a recent DigiEduHack networking session, new and returning hosts shared valuable lessons and tips from their own experience:

  • “The sooner you start the preparation of your hackathon, the better. Partnership building takes time but adds a lot of value.”
  • Spreading awareness well in advance is key. Use a lot of different channels – Discord, email, Instagram, LinkedIn – and always keep people in the loop with reminders.”
  • “Explain the initiative clearly. A lot of people don’t know what DigiEduHack is. The more clearly you communicate it, the more interest and participation you’ll get.”
